| Clearwater - This is a great destination for
those on fly-drive and two centre holidays as Clearwater, the
largest of the Gulf Coast of Mexico resorts is located about 130
miles from Orlando. Clearwater offers beautiful stretches of white
sand, a whole range of watersports, including big game fishing. The
area has a lively atmosphere, excellent range of restaurants, bars,
nightclubs and shops. The world-famous Busch Gardens theme park at
Tampa Bay is close by and a boat trip to see dolphins is a must.
Daytona Beach - Located on the central east coast of Florida,
Daytona Beach stretches for over 20 miles along white sandy beaches
and is a favourite family beach holiday destination but is only an
hour’s drive away from the Kennedy Space Center. From the beaches at
Daytona you can surf, jet-ski, sail, parasail, go fishing, hire
bicycles, fly kites and even take a drive in a hired beach buggy.
Daytona’s hard sands have provided fun for speedlovers ever since
the likes of Sir Malcolm Campbell set and broke records on the
beach. Now cruising is still allowed along an 18-mile section of the
beach during daylight, but the speed limit is a only 10 miles per
hour: for real speed visit the world-famous Daytona International
Speedway where the annual Daytona 500 Nascar race is held every
year. With so much to do on the beach there is little need to do
anything else but for those who do there are many attractions in the
neighbouring towns along the intracoastal waterway and on the
mainland. From archaeological sites to mini-golf, museums, haunted
houses, planetariums and chocolate factories, there is always
something to do in Daytona Beach. Its location means it is within
easy reach of Orlando and its theme parks for day trips - you can
visit Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios and Epcot
Center.
Fort Lauderdale - Known as the ‘Venice of America’ Fort
Lauderdale is a city of islands, built on a network of canals,
rivers, bays and waterways, fronted by 23 miles of glorious golden
sands on the Atlantic coast of Florida. A sophisticated yet casual
resort town attracting families and couples from all over the World,
boating is hugely popular as is cycling, roller-blading or simply
strolling along the palm tree fringed beachfront promenade. Divers
are can find one of the only living coral reefs in the United States
accessible from shore, and there are many sporting facilities
throughout the city, particularly some amazing golf courses. On the
cultural side, visit the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the
Florida Grand Opera, or the annual Film Festival and numerous art
galleries and museums. Fort Lauderdale has the facilities and
attractions to please young or old wanting fun in the sun and Miami
lies only a day trip, 40 miles away.
International Drive - Known as 'I-Drive' this is the hub
of Orlando's tourist area, with a five-mile stretch of hotels,
restaurants, bars, shopping malls and theme parks, including the
famous Wet 'n' Wild water park. There is a shuttle service called
the 'I-Ride System', which operates a trams from 7am to midnight.
There is 24/7 fun and entertainment with a great selection of
restaurants, ranging from fast food and Chinese to gourmet cuisine.
For bargain hunters visit the Belz Factory Outlet, where you'll find
designer labels at great-value prices or the Florida Mall which has
over 200 stores.
Key West - The last in a string of nearly 400 islands that
extend from the tip of mainland Florida into the Atlantic Ocean, and
the southernmost point of the US has become one of Florida's busiest
tourist destinations. Key West is connected to the mainland by one
of the most famous roads in America. Known as The Overseas Highway
(US1) it links Miami with the Florida Keys islands, crossing about
30 of them via a series of bridges and causeways. Key West, 159
miles southwest of Miami, is literally the end of the road. The
drive through the Keys offers some spectacular scenery and all the
populated islands and resorts en route offer great watersports
opportunities. Good beaches are rare, but the Coral Coast offers
some excellent snorkelling, diving and fishing. The city of Key West
is charming with plenty of historic interest, palm-lined streets,
gingerbread mansions and tin-roofed conch houses. It is a favourite
haunt of artists and writers, having been home to Ernest Hemingway,
Thomas Edison, Harry Truman and Tennessee Williams.
Kissimmee - Close to Walt Disney World in Florida, Kissimmee is
a favourite with families as it has plenty of facilities, including
shops, restaurants and bars. Rent a luxurious villa with its own
pool or a condo for those on a tighter budget. For nightlife, there
are places to enjoy an exciting dinner show, including Arabian
Nights, Medieval Times, Capone's and Downtown Disney.
The 20 mile long main street leads to the entrance of Walt Disney
World, and other attractions, including Water Mania, a 36acre water
park. Visit the 'Old Town' shopping mall which recaptures small town
America, with authentic wood-fronted stores and tree-lined
sidewalks.
